What do you want better in your personal life? What do you want better in your business life? The good news is, success principles are the same in all disciplines and industries. They are easily transferred when done with clarity, commitment, and courage.
Once you are clear about exactly what you want, your commitment is fueled by how much you want it. How great is your desire? How necessary is it? If enough, you will, by trial and error, develop your habits and systems to go as far and high as you desire. Maybe you want a gold medal or simply bake a cake.
I have found that success is 10% knowledge and 90% activating the knowledge.
It’s usually not the knowledge that we need most. It’s behavioral training that is needed. Behavior is trained by DOING. Therefore, success courses are most successful when taught using exponential learning, rather than only intellectual learning.
Learn and apply! Do in sequenced intervals of time while monitoring completion and accountability over and over. Adjust, adapt, and repeat again and again…
Creativity and innovation are often enhanced, if not born, in the adjusting mode while monitoring the adjustments and adaptations. Use the innovation steps on Page 74 of Think it! Work it! Do it! as a guide. Apply the ‘What If’ principle to create, innovate, and make it ‘your one-of-a-kind.’ Keep repeating the process until you are pleased with the outcome.
In the early 2000s, Britain was terrible at cycling. For over 100 years of competitive racing, no British cyclist had ever won the Tour de France and only 1 had ever won an Olympic medal.
Everything changed in 2003 when the UK hired David Brailsford as their new head cycling coach. He didn’t scour the globe to find better athletes or throw money at the problem until it got better. Instead, David looked for hundreds of ways to improve performance, even in the tiniest little things.
He broke down every component of what goes into professional cycling, from the grip on the handlebars to the specific gels used in post-training massages. It doesn’t sound like much, but David knew that he didn’t have to revolutionize anything to lead the team to gold.
He didn’t need to invent a new bike or push the athletes past their breaking point. He just needed to do a lot of little things, just a little bit better. David knew about the power of marginal gains… known as the 1% rule.
So… what happened to Britain’s cycling team?
- Just 5 years after they started this approach, they won 60% of the gold medals in the Beijing Olympics.
- And 4 years after that, they set 9 Olympic records and 7 world records at the 2012 games in London.
- And, they won the Tour de France for the first time!
My questions to you:
- What would happen if you found a few tweaks and took action?
- What are you missing that, with a small shift, would give a radical boost to your success?
- What is your 1% key just waiting to unlock exponential results?
Minds must be fertile before seeds can grow. As is said, “When the student is ready the teacher will appear.” Be willing to ask questions, learn… and DO!
By consistently practicing clarity, commitment, and courage, they become habits, as will attention to details and utilizing the power of the 1% rule. Apply these habits to getting what you want. You will amaze yourself!
